A better sports-shoe fit check before you play

Check heel hold, toe room, width and sport-specific movement—not only your usual size number.

A size label is a starting point. Brand shape, sock thickness, foot width and the movement of your sport all influence whether a shoe feels secure without creating pressure.

Recreate game conditions

Try footwear with the type of socks and any orthoses you normally use. Lace both shoes and allow time to notice pressure. Feet can differ, so fit for the larger foot rather than assuming they match.

  • Wear your playing socks
  • Try both shoes
  • Check fit while standing

Move in every direction

Walk, stop and make controlled sport-specific movements where the fitting space allows. The heel should feel held and the forefoot should not be squeezed. Toes need usable room without the foot sliding inside.

  • Heel hold
  • Forefoot width
  • Toe room
  • No painful pressure points

Match the shoe to the surface

Use footwear designed for your sport and playing surface. Traction patterns, support and cushioning priorities differ. Replace shoes when damage or wear affects grip, fit or support rather than relying on appearance alone.

Explore sports footwear

Train responsibly. Progress gradually, use a safe training area and suitable protective equipment, and stop if you feel pain. Seek qualified coaching or medical guidance when needed.
