How to assess an English willow bat beyond the sticker
A practical checklist for judging pickup, balance, profile and feel before choosing your next cricket bat.
Scale weight is only one part of how a bat behaves. Two bats with a similar weight can feel very different once pickup, balance, handle and profile enter the equation.
Start with pickup
Take your normal stance and make several controlled swings. Notice whether the bat arrives comfortably and whether you can stop the swing without fighting its momentum. A manageable pickup supports control late in a session.
- Use your usual batting gloves
- Swing in your normal stance
- Check control as well as speed
Read the profile
Look at where the bat carries its volume and consider where you usually make contact. The visible grain does not tell the whole story; shape, pressing, handle feel and overall balance also affect suitability.
- Inspect the face and edges
- Check the toe for damage
- Look for a profile suited to your game
Choose for your cricket
Think about your playing level, typical pitches and preferred scoring areas. When possible, compare multiple bats rather than buying from one number or photograph alone. Prepare and maintain a natural-willow bat according to the maker's instructions.
Train responsibly. Progress gradually, use a safe training area and suitable protective equipment, and stop if you feel pain. Seek qualified coaching or medical guidance when needed.
